Canadian musician, composer and percussionist based in Asturias, Spain. Rooted in jazz and improvisation, Ian’s work brings together performance, composition and a wide range of musical influences.

Behind the music

Ian is a professional drummer with a background in jazz and contemporary music, trained in Jazz Performance at the University of Toronto. His career has included extensive live, studio, television and radio work across North America and Europe, performing in settings ranging from small jazz ensembles to large-scale productions and sporting events.
His playing combines a strong technical foundation with an emphasis on musicality, improvisation and versatility.

Ian began playing pipe band percussion at the age of six and has since performed and competed at the highest levels of the international pipe band scene. His career has included the Peel Regional Police, Alberta Caledonia, Los Angeles Scots and the renowned Shotts and Dykehead Caledonia Pipe Band.Alongside performance, he has extensive experience in drum corps composition, arranging and instruction. Ian is the director of percussion for Saxum Pipe Band, based in Gijon, Asturias.

Sounds & Projects

Ian maintains an active freelance performance career, collaborating with artists and ensembles in Spain and Canada across jazz, contemporary music and a variety of live projects. He is available for concerts, events, touring and other freelance performance work, bringing an adaptable and creative approach to each musical setting.A central part of his current work is AKNOT, a jazz trio built around interplay, improvisation and a shared approach to contemporary jazz. Alongside the trio, Ian continues to work with different artists and projects, creating connections between his musical life in Asturias and his roots in Canada.

Performance & Creation

Ian is available for freelance work across live performance, studio recording and creative collaboration. Services include live drums and percussion, session work, remote drum and percussion recording from his studio in Asturias, as well as composition and arranging for new and existing projects.He can work from charts, demos and reference tracks or help shape the music from its earliest stages with a collaborative approach. Remote sessions can be recorded and delivered directly to artists, composers and producers anywhere in the world.

Learn & Play

Ian offers individual drum and percussion lessons from his private studio in Asturias, with tuition tailored to all ages, abilities and musical goals. Lessons are built around real instruments and practical music-making, combining technique, musicianship and creativity.
